With the buzz about bentonite clay circulating the web, it is important to know how to use it, in addition to knowing in what ways it can be of benefit or harm to you. Bentonite clay has many health and beauty benefits which you can read about here. Although, there are a number of pre-cautions to take when using bentonite clay, you can read about  here.  Below I will give you instructions of how to get the best out of your bentonite clay and a few recipe combinations!

How to use bentonite clay:

1.You MUST use plastic, wood, rubber or glass utensils while dealing with the clay.

The clay is highly negative and binds to positively charged metals and toxins. If you use metal utensils, the clay will bind to the positive charges of the metal and make the clay inactive. To avoid the possibility of working with inactive clay, I use rubber or wood to get the best out of my clay.

2.Mix the clay with purified water!

Just like the reason for avoiding metal, it is important to avoid water that would have heavy metals in it because it would make your clay useless. Therefore it is advised that you only use purified water while mixing your clay

3. For mixing, you can put water first or the clay power first.

You can either put water first then stir in the clay, or slowly pour water over the clay until you get the consistency you like. Both of these methods can be tricky in regards to measurement. I usually put the clay first then slowly pour water over them because if I put a bit more water, I can easily compensate with a little bit of clay. The other way, if I start with too much water, I will have too much clay whether I like it or not.

4.Make sure to have a spritzing bottle with you when using the clay as a mask

When using the clay as a face mask, make sure that you have a spray bottle with purified water or rose water to spritz over your face as the clay dries.

Mask Recipes:

The measurements vary depending how much you want to make and how thick or watery you want the clay.

  1. The easiest and simplest recipe is purified water and the bentonite clay
  2. For a hydrating detoxifying mask: 2 tablespoons bentonite clay, 2-5 tablespoons purified water and 1/2 teaspoon honey
  3. For a detoxifying, cleansing and toning mask: 2 tablespoons bentonite clay and 2-5 tablespoons rose water.
  4. For a stronger cleansing, toning mask and cooling mask: 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay, with 1/2 tablespoon rose petal powder and 2-5 tablespoons rose water.
  5. For a hydrating, moisturizing mask: 2 tablespoons of  bentonite clay, 1 teaspoon honey and/or aloe vera gel, 2-5 tablespoons of purified water.

Apply the mask evenly on your face and neck including, eyelids, jaw and your whole forehead. As the clay dries, you will start feeling it pulling and tightening on your face, don’t be alarmed, this is normal. As the tightening increases, take a spray bottle with rose or blossom water and spritz your face to reactivate the clay. Keep the mask on for 15-30 minutes depending on your comfort level.

Wash off with warm water and pat your face dry.

Bath recipes:

  1. Soak in hot water and 3/4 cup bentonite clay
  2. Soak in hot water, 3/4 cup bentonite clay and 1-2 cups of apple cider vinegar
  3. Soak in hot water, 3/4 bentonite clay, and 1 cup epsom salt
  4. Soak in hot water, 3/4 cup bentonite clay and 1/2 cup freshly grated ginger (can substitute for 2 tablespoon ginger powder
  5. Soak in hot water, 3/4 bentonite clay, 5 tea bags of jasmine green or green tea and 1-5 tablespoons coconut oil

Bentonite clay is an incredible product that can be used for various health and beauty purposes that I have explained here. Although before getting comfortable with the clay it is important to understand it’s qualities and tendencies and how it can positively or negatively affect your health and beauty.

1.Not all bentonite clays are made equal

As a matter of fact, there are 4 different types of bentonite clay. Sodium, calcium, aluminum and potassium, the most commercially abundant being sodium and calcium bentonite clays. The best part about bentonite clay is that it substitutes its molecular agent for your toxins.

For example, sodium bentonite clay will exchange sodium in place for your heavy metals, acids etc etc.

Now, what makes the difference between the two commercial clays? Sodium bentonite clay is highly negative, therefore is a stronger detoxifying agent than calcium bentonite clay, which is mostly used as a re-mineralizing agent as it deposits calcium and silica into your body. For the most part, sodium bentonite clay is mostly used externally, and calcium benotite clay is used internally.

2.Ingestion of bentonite clay has its dangers.

Yes, it does! It is absolutely important to only consume bentonite that is food grade and has been authorized for ingestion. If the label says “external use only” which most of them do, please do not consider making a drink out of it, no matter how dire your need seems.

The danger is more imminent for sodium bentonite clay, it could seem like a good idea to ingest it for internal detox as it is the stronger detoxifying bentonite. Sodium bentonite clay deposits sodium into your system in trade of the toxins it pulls out, which can lead to too much sodium in your system and create a whole lot of other health issues. Sodium bentonite clay can be ingested, just make sure it’s food grade, follow the directions provided by the company and just don’t over do it.

3.Aluminum content in bentonite clay

Yes, Bentonite clay has aluminum content.

Although, according to the Redmond Clay, one of my favorite bentonite clay companies, you should rest easy knowing that experts agree that naturally occurring aluminum such as the type in bentonite clay, cannot be absorbed into our systems. It’s an entirely different story for the heavy metal additives found in various commercial foods and beauty products in our modern day health and beauty markets.

4.It will cause you constipation!

Yes, yes, yes. Ingestion of food grade bentonite clay can cause you constipation. The clay will bind with toxins, heavy metals, acids and other unwanted visitors from your body and make its way into your stool.

Now imagine that as it binds with your internal trash, its becoming heavier and will need help making a proper exit. Therefore, if you drink bentonite clay, it is important to drink lots and lots and lots and lots of water to help with the detox and elimination process, reduce the chance of constipation and keep from carrying around clay bound to internal trash in your system.

So… hydrate! hydrate! hydrate!

The other thing you can do is make sure that you have proper fiber in your diet. This will help with elimination and make sure that none of the toxins get reabsorbed back into your system due to constipation.

5.You must research your bentonite clay company

Because bentonite clay is highly negative, it is important that no heavy metals touch it at any time. Reason being that it will bind to the positive charges of that metal and become useless without any detoxifying properties.

The way the bentonite clay is mined makes a difference of whether you will get detoxifying bentonite clay, or useless metal bound clay that will not serve you in any way. Therefore when looking around for bentonite clay companies, look for companies that mine and use stainless steel. Stainless steel mining tools decrease the risk of heavy metals attaching to the clay and thus deliver to you the most active clay for your detoxifying purposes.

What bentonite clay do I use?

For external use:

Astura 100% Pure Sodium Bentonite Indian Healing Clay. With this option, you get more for your money, a wooden spoon inside and it’s sodium bentonite clay only.

Redmond 100% Natural Sodium Bentonite and Calcium Clay. Redmond clays are more expensive, but with this option, you get a mixture of both sodium and calcium clay.

For internal use:

Fossil Power Food Grade Sodium Bentonite Clay. With this option you get more for your money, you can use it for both internal and external purposes, although, use high caution when ingesting because of its sodium content.

Clay Terra Calcium Bentonite Clay. This option is a bit more expensive, but you can use it for both internal and external purposes and its calcium clay only.

Before we get started, let’s settle the question , what is bentonite clay?

Bentonite clay is a detoxifying clay that has been used over centuries across different continents for various purposes from beauty to health. The clay  gets its detoxifying agents from its highly negative nature, which means that it  does an incredible job absorbing positively charged toxins.

Personal experience:

My introduction to bentonite clay was a complete accident. I was looking for a better, more natural way to wash my hair and in my research, I came across the concept of washing hair with clay.

The idea of using clay for hair was not a completely foreign idea to me because I knew that the Massai in Kenya use red clay native to Northern Kenya to strengthen and cleanse their hair.

Well, I figured what harm would it do to actually try it and see how it works. I bought my clay from Amazon, and with further research, discovered that this amazing product could do more for me than just clean my hair!

1.Hair

Everyone looks for ways to make their hair healthier, longer, stronger etc. Not that bentonite clay will handle all those worries for you, it won’t. But, it will remove toxins and buildup from your hair and scalp, making it much easier to manage and will balance your hair’s ph level which will make your tresses much stronger.

After a bentonite clay cleanse, your hair will be squeaky clean without the crunchy or stripped down feel that comes after sulfate filled shampoo. Bentonite clay is an excellent natural substitute to regular sulphate and other chemical filled shampoos, because other than cleansing your hair, it removes toxins and adds minerals that naturally exist in the clay to your hair.

For naturally curly hair, bentonite clay does an incredible job bringing out your hair’s natural curl pattern which would be an incredible look to rock for a wash and go.

Recipe:

(P.S: The company that sells the rose and orange blossom water, also sell a combo pack of both on Amazon).

Whenever I use rose or orange blossom water, I mix in 1/2 a cup, then if I need any more liquid, I add purified water to the mixture.

Add clay or water until you get your desired consistency. The amount you need will change based on the length and thickness of your hair.

2.Face

Other than removing toxins from your face, bentonite clay also does an awesome job cleaning and shrinking pores, reducing acne and acne scars, helping with the reduction of sebum (natural oil produced by the face) and reduces the appearance of wrinkes among other benefits.

Bentonite clay is a wonderful substitute for commercial chemical filled masks and powders because it is natural and does more for your face than takes away from it. As a bonus, after a bentonite clay mask, your face will feel softer and have a healthy glow.

Recipe: (More mask recipes here)

Apply the mask evenly on your face and neck including, eyelids, jaw and your whole forehead. As the clay dries, you will start feeling it pulling and tightening on your face, don’t be alarmed, this is normal.

As the tightening increases, take the spray bottle and spritz your face to reactivate the clay. Keep the mask on for 15-30 minutes depending on your comfort level.

Wash off with warm water and pat your face dry.

3.Full body detox:

There are ways to fully detoxify the body internally and externally with bentonite clay

  • Internally: Food grade bentonite clay can be bought for this purpose, which would help detoxify the system of heavy metals, toxins, and acids.
  • If you chose to ingest bentonite clay, read this article for basic bentonite clay facts and risks before using it.
  • External: There are two ways to fully detox the whole body externally with bentonite clay.
    • First, by doing a full body bentonite clay mask which would probably take some serious time and serious effort and occasionally require the assistance of a second person.
    • Second, by doing a detoxifying bentonite clay bath. This is a much easier step of the two which I do myself and would recommend for anyone wanting to externally detoxify with bentonite clay. (Read this article for bath recipes)

4. DIY cosmetics:

Majority of commercially sold cosmetics are filled with chemicals and toxic heavy metals that do serious damage on our health and reduce our chances of wading off big diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disease.

With that said, it is important to find healthy natural substitutes that do the job of keeping us clean, smelling fresh and looking beautiful, without adding toxic elements that harm our well-being.

Bentonite clay is an excellent ingredient for making DIY cosmetic products, other than doing the basic job that other cosmetics do, it detoxifies the body as well. Bentonite clay is wonderful for making detoxifying deodorant, toothpaste, makeup, and masks.

Honey, the perfect healthy substitute for anything sweet, has numerous health benefits as well as beauty benefits that surpass any superficial beauty product in the market.

What I mean is, honey will do a much better job at moisturizing, hydrating, conditioning and protecting your skin and hair than any expensive or inexpensive products you have bought or opt to buy at the store.

Honey does a great job preserving our beauty because it has loads of nutrients, healing compounds and anti-oxidants and as a natural humectant, it does an incredible job pulling moisture from the air and sealing it in our skin and hair.

When looking for honey, make sure to purchase raw honey that has not been pasteurized or heat treated, this type of honey is higher in enzymes and anti-oxidants and will work wonders for your beauty.

Personal experience:

As I was slowly transitioning into a more natural way of life, finding substitutes for my daily maintenance was getting pricey and difficult. It is not very easy to find an affordable beauty product that is completely natural.

I dug deep (asked professor google) ho-and-behold, I found out that honey can work wonders as a facial cleanser, pore purifier, and strengthens hair follicles and have been hooked ever since. Here are a few of the ways I use honey in my beauty regimen.

What honey do I use? and why?

I use Y.S. Eco Bee Farms’ raw honey (for intake and beauty recipes), and their manuka honey (sporadically for health benefits).

Y.S honey is raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized and unheated, which are all very good qualities in honey. Additionally, the means they use to bee keep are sustainable and chemical free, and the company has been certified as organic (makes the tree-hugging side of me very happy).

1. Face and skin

Honey is absolutely incredible for the face, aside from working to clean your pores and moisturizing your face, honey will also get rid of acne and completely clear acne scars. It does this with its calming and anti-inflammatory properties that draw out excessive fluid from the skin and help reduce the redness and swelling caused by acne.

It also doesn’t hurt that honey is anti-bacterial and anti-septic so it does a wonderful job healing acne and zits. Honey will leave your face feeling smooth and healthy.

Although, you should note that if your intention to use honey is for clearing out your acne, allow yourself about a month of daily use to really see and appreciate its work.

Skin:

As it is anti-bacterial and anti-septic, honey does a wonderful job clearing out dandruff on the scalp, as well as eczema and psoriasis on the skin. Because of its moisturizing properties, honey encourages quick skin restoration and helps with the disappearance of scars.

Recipe: One of my favorite honey recipes is honey and garlic face cleanser.

Take a quarter clove of garlic for half a cup of honey and of course, if this is too much, use less garlic for a larger amount of honey.

Yes, it might smell like a bit of garlic, but it works extreme wonders for your face.

Once rinsed, the face will feel smooth and moisturized and look absolutely flawless. I usually follow up with a spritz of rose water to tone my face (which covers the smell if any is left) then finish with sweet almond oil.

2. Hair, Lashes, and Eyebrows

Ooooh, my hair after a honey masque feels like butter.

Honey is an absolutely incredible moisturizer and conditioner that can do wonders for dry and brittle hair, as well as maintain the health of already healthy hair.

Other than moisturizing and conditioning hair, honey also strengthens hair follicles and prevents breakage and damage, gets rid of dandruff and keeps the scalp healthy. As a bonus, if left for a long period of time, honey can lighten the shade of hair.

Recipe:

I normally use honey on damp hair as it would otherwise be very difficult to apply. I apply on slightly wet or damp hair and leave it for 30 minutes or more before rinsing it out, moisturizing and styling my hair.

Other times, I mix the honey with yogurt, a deep conditioner and/or an oil such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil or black castor oil to boost its moisturizing qualities, then keep the hair masque on for an hour or more.

3. Lips

When my lips get chapped, or increase in dryness, my first go to is always honey.

Well, it is also a plus that I get to keep something sweet on my lips for a period of time. Honey will soften your lips in addition to hydrating and healing cracked/chapped lips and will also lighten the color of your lips.

Recipe:

(Cracked/chapped lips) Dab a bit of honey on your finger and apply it to your lips, then follow up with sweet almond oil, shea butter or another heavy oil that will help hydrate and moisturize your chapped lips.

Repeat this through the day as you would with regular chap stick and enjoy the benefits.

This will also liven the color of your lips.

4. Nails

Honey helps with the rejuvenation of your cuticles by moisturizing, soothing and healing them. This prevents bacterial and fungal infections that can occur as a result of unhealthy cuticles.

Recipe: Mix your desired amount of honey with coconut oil and apply to your cuticles. You can also mix with olive oil and/or aloe vera gel for additional healing of very cracked cuticles.

5. Eyes

Honey has been discovered to be a cure to various eye ailments such as corneal ulcers due to inflammation, and eye dimness of the cornea etc.

Honey also refreshes tired eyes, helps with dry and sore eyes, protects from glaucoma in addition to healing eye infections. Honey has a lot of healthy and healing properties that do wonders for your eyes.

In addition, with time and patience, honey can also lighten eye color.

Recipe: 1 drop of honey for 5 drops of purified water.

***The solution will need to be stored in a sterilized glass bottle in a cool and dry place. A healthy shelf life is about 3 days

***Please consult your doctor before using honey to assist with eye health.
