The post Getting Started: 4 ways to set yourself up for a successful blog appeared first on Blissfully Healing.
]]>This was in 2016. 2017 also came and almost left and I decided that it’s time I actually take this seriously. Well, I must say that my circumstances gave me the perfect opportunity to get started. In the beginning of the 3rd quarter of the year, I got terribly sick and decided to resign from work. I then decided to fly to Kenya do some healing and be with my now ex-husband. Since I was mostly doing nothing, I decided to spend my time wisely and get started with writing posts.
I was excited. I have always dreamed of doing my own thing. I do not like the idea of having to work and report to someone else for the rest of my life. I am very much a free spirit, and doing my own thing and the possibility of making an impact on the world and its inhabitants made me take the big leap.
Yes, I know its going to be a lot of work, much more work than going to work at 8am and leaving at 5pm. All I know is that I will make a bigger impact serving others through this endeavor than serving myself with an 8-5 job. I have been struggling with the decision to launch a blog for almost 2 years.
Mid 2017 I decided to go for it and signed up through bluehost (stay tuned, more about this coming soon). By the end of 2017, I had a domain (blissfullyhealing.com) and an email address(blissfullyhealing@gmail.com) and here I was in Kenya with lots of time on my hands, so I decided to make one of my dreams come true. Start a lifestyle blog.

Once you decide that you want and you will start a blog, you will need discipline more than anything else. Starting a blog is your personal business, therefore you will need to set the rules, the order, the discipline, and the schedule of your employee, who is you. You will need to set yourself up for success. This will require that you be frank, kind and harsh with yourself about your work schedule and your attitude towards your blog. I am not saying that you will need to force yourself, as a matter of fact I am not a fan of forcing oneself, but I am saying that you will need to establish discipline.
Your desire for success must be stronger than your fear to fail. Yes, Yes, Yes. You must know that you will succeed and that along the way, you will fail, mess up and even feel like giving up, but that should not make it a reason for you not to try. Go ahead and fail, I did. I started a blog in March of 2016 (easeofbliss.com). I know there are many reasons why it did not take off, and that was a learning lesson for me. It took me almost a year and a half to get back on the boat, and here I am rowing along and making the commitment to row to success.
The biggest hater you have in life is yourself. Unless you learn how to have positive self talk and respect your abilities, you will always pull yourself down and will never allow yourself to succeed. A blog is a personal journey as it is a business journey. The better you become with yourself, the better your blog will be.
The reason I am saying this is because you are the only partner you have for now, especially if the blog is a solo venture. You are the only person who understands what is going on and all the intricacies that you have to deal with. Therefore, being your own friend and support system is important. I am not saying that you should never be tough on yourself, as a matter of fact you need to establish discipline, but I am saying that you need to learn to encourage yourself and support your own ideas.
You can, should and will ask people to read and comment on your work, but if you are not comfortable with yourself, you will not be comfortable with your work, therefore people’s opinions will weigh more than they should in your eyes and ears.
I visualize what I will do with my blog within a year when it is bigger and profitable than I can handle on my own. I will hire a friend who is excellent in management and an excellent author to run the blog while I work with individuals, give lectures, and workshops on various topics within my niche. I will keep writing, although by then, I will have a number of guest speakers and authors who will also share their stories and opinions within the blog topic. You must visualize big, visualize success and work towards it. I suppose what I am asking you to do is dream big and take steps towards that dream.
Life is all about balance, and so is your blog.
I have read numerous articles that speak of how you must give it all you can within the first few months and be diligent in working 7 days a week, odd number of hours each day.
I must respectfully disagree.
I would rather pace myself, work hard but with discipline and allow myself to also rest and recover on a daily and weekly basis. The issue I have with pushing too hard and trying to grow too quickly is that I get burned out quickly. If your blog is a personal venture like mine, what will happen when you have no more juice to give, you will simply stop or quit. Who wants that?
So, I would advise you to take it easy, allow your blog to grow on its own pace as you put in the time and effort needed to developing it. Rest, Rest, Rest. As important as it is to discipline your work time, you will also need to discipline your resting time. In this situation I would say, as an employee, do not allow yourself to be overwork, even if you are your own boss.
This is my favorite piece of advice to anyone trying to start a blog or any other startup.
Celebrate the little and big accomplishments you have. Of course you should celebrate in proportion to the win, but nonetheless, celebrate what you succeed at, and you should understand that a failure is also a success. Therefore you should always be in a state of celebrating, celebrating the hard work you do and the progress that you see on your blog.
Do not let yourself feel downcast and unhappy with your work. Enjoy the experience and try your best to be the support that you need. Do not look for approval from others, you need to have your own approval before you are able to get it from others.
So, celebrate that you got 6 views in one day, yes this is very little, but you know what, you worked hard and that is enough for celebration.
Discussion question:
What are some of the things you did to get started on your blog?
